The former President of the United States, Donald J. Trump has congratulated the Nigerian government for recently banning the social media giant, Twitter in Nigeria. Trump Praises Nigeria For Banning Twitter, Says Other Countries Should Do Same.
The Nigerian government recently banned the platform after it suspended the country’s President, Mohamadu Buhari‘s account over rules violation.
The ban provoked a general outrage as social media users in the country described it as a violation of freedom of speech and a step towards dictatorship. The 45th president of the US however does not think so. He in fact thinks the move is worth applauding and he should have done the same when he was still the president.
“Congratulations to the county of Nigeria, who just banned Twitter because they banned their president. More countries should ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing free open speech — all voices should be heard. Who are they to dictate good and evil if they themselves are evil? ” President Trump said in a statement.
According to Trump, more competitors will emerge if Twitter and Facebook continue to enforce rules for users.
Trump added that perhaps he should have banned Twitter and Facebook when he was in the White House but was dissuaded by Mark Zuckerberg.
He however hinted that he may do that in 2024 when he comes back.
Recall that Trump was equally banned from Twitter and Facebook earlier this year for the role he played during the massacre at the US Capitol after the Presidential elections – little wonder he wants the platforms to be banned in all countries.
Twitter was banned in Nigeria after the social media site had previously removed a post from President Muhammadu Buhari in which he threatened retribution against secessionists for alleged attacks on government buildings.
The now deleted tweet reads:
“Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
