Forbes recently published its prestigious list of top 100 African Innovators, Inventions, and Icons, 2021. Three Cameroonians made it to this list. They are Marc Arthur Zang, Samuel Eto’o and Professor Rose Leke.
Arthur Zang, is a 24-year-old Cameroonian inventor. His inventions have provided access to much-needed health diagnostic tools not only in his home country Cameroon but also in other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, especially with the coming of Covid-19.
Forbes considered two of his inventions and the impact they have had.
The first is Cardio Pad, a touch screen medical tablet that enables the diagnosis of heart diseases in Sub Sahara Africa. The handheld tablet that was launched in 2016 can be used by doctors and nurses in remote areas to scan the chest of a patient and send it to a specialist for review.
Arthur Zang’s second invention is OXYNET. OXYNET is an affordable and easy-to-assemble oxygen-producing machine. The device is quite useful, especially in helping hospitals fight COVID-19. Each OXYNET station is connected to electricity and can produce pure oxygen with a level of 93% from natural air. The station also comes with a battery and a solar panel and is 3G enabled granting both the users and operators access to monitor it effectively and can even be monitored remotely using a mobile phone.
The second Cameroonian on Forbes list of top 100 Icons, Inventions, and Innovators is the legendary Cameroonian footballer, Samuel Eto’o.
Obviously, Eto’o makes it to the list, thanks to his outstanding football skills and raw talent. In his prime, the icon was seen as one of the best strikers in the world and is one of the greatest African players of all time, winning the African Player of the Year a record four times: in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010. He helped Cameroon win both the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations finals and also reached the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup Final. He is also the all-time leading striker in the history of the African Cup of Champions with a whopping 18 goals under his belt.
He holds the record for the most number of appearances by any African player in La Liga. He has been part of the team that won the La Liga three times and was responsible for one goal in two of these final matches.
Professor Rose Leke
Rose Leke is a Cameroonian malariologist and Emeritus Professor of Immunology and Parasitology at the University of Yaounde I.
Professor Leke has contributed enormously to the fight against malaria in her community through her studies around malaria. She sits on numerous health boards and committees across the continent and has created the Higher Institute for Growth in Health Research for Women Consortium to mentor female scientists in Cameroon. As chair of the International Regulations Emergency Committee of Polio, she helped eradicate wild polio across Africa in 2020.
The 74-year-old Professor believes her main goal going forward is preparing young female scientists for the future.
