The Fisherman’s Diary Becomes First Cameroonian Film To Be Acquired By Netflix

Cameroonian multi-award-winning movie The Fisherman’s Diary has become the first movie from the country to be acquired by American top-rated streaming platform Netflix. The good news was shared by the movie producer Kang Quintus on his official Facebook page this Monday, March 1, 2020. When the movie was released in 2020, Kang Quintus started a campaign to get the movie on the platform. That led to a whole debate on either putting Cameroonian content on local platforms or international platforms like Netflix. Well, today, virtually every Cameroonian is proud a movie from the country is finally on such a giant streaming platform.


This is just another major milestone not just for the movie and producer Kang Quintus but also for the Cameroonian movie industry as a whole. Just a few weeks back, the movie became the first Cameroonian movie to be shortlisted in the OSCARS list, after grabbing several awards at different film festivals in Africa and the world.

The Fisherman’s Diary tells the story of a young girl battling to get an education in a society where girls education is forbidden.

It stars Kang Quintus, Faith Fidel, Laura Onyama, Godisz Fungwa, Ramsey Noah, Daphne Njie, Cosson Chinopoh, Prince Sube Mayorchu, Godwill Neba, among a host of other actors.

The movie is produced by Kang Quintus and directed by Enah Johnscott. The movie has won several awards at different movie festivals and award ceremonies including the International Historical Film festival (Best Actor – Kang Quintus, Future award- Faith Fidel, Jury’s Special Award – The Fisherman’s Diary), I Will Tell International Film Festival 2020 (Best Feature film – The Fisherman’s Diary, Best Actress – Faith Fidel), Baltimore Int’l Black Film Festival 2020 (Best International Feature – The Fisherman’s Diary), Best Actor Award New York 2020 (Best Actor in a drama – Kang Quintus), Ecrans Noirs Film Festival Cameroon 2020 (Best Actress – Faith Fidel), Golden Movie Awards Africa 2020 (Best Actor – Kang Quintus, Best Actress – Faith Fidel, Best Overal Film – The Fisherman’s Diary, Best Director – Enah Johnscot), AMAA 2020 (Best Actor – Kang Quintus, Best Film – Fisherman’s Diary, Best Director – Enah Johnscot), among several others.

According to the movie producer, details on when the movie will be available on the Netflix platform will be announced soon.
