Before his death, besides being the traditional ruler of the Bamouns, Sultan Mbombo Njoya was equally a Senator and a member of the political bureau of the ruling CPDM party.

He also held several important positions in government, notably:

  • Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1981
  • Minister of Youth and Sports from 1982
  • Minister of Information and Culture from 1986
  • Cameroon Ambassador to Egypt.
  • Minister of Territorial Administration from 1988
  • Minister of Youths and Sports from 1990
  • Minister Delegate to the Presidency in charge of Relations with the Assemblies from April 9, 1992
  • Board Chair of the CRTV from 1988
