Samuel Eto’o Reportedly Vying To Become Next President Of Fecafoot

According to a report on one of Cameroon’s leading news outlets, Journal du Cameroon.com, Cameroonian legendary Footballer is vying to replace Seidou Mbombo Njoya as the next president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

According to the report, the former indomitable lions’ captain would not be the only former football star to stand for the position, another former indomitable lions player, Geremi Njitap would also be vying to take over the federation.

Is Samuel Eto’o eligible to compete for the position of FECAFOOT President? To be elected as the president of the federation, an individual must fulfill the following conditions according to article 45:

  1. A candidate for the presidency of FECAFOOT must be any Cameroonian of the two sexes at least twenty-one (21) years old and at most seventy-five (75) years old completed and meeting the general eligibility conditions provided for in the present Statutes.
  2. Any candidate must be sponsored by ten (10) delegates to the General Assembly of the FECAFOOT. A delegate cannot sponsor more than one presidential candidate.
  3. Any candidate for the post of president of FECAFOOT must have played an active role in football as a manager, promoter of a team or a football school, footballer and former player, league official, coach, referee, sports doctor, football club official, sports journalist during the four years preceding the submission of his candidacy.
  4. Any candidate for the post of President of FECAFOOT must submit to a integrity check carried out by the FECAFOOT Ethics Committee and the terms of which are defined by the FECAFOOT Code of Ethics. The Ethics Committee immediately transmits its findings to the Electoral Commission, said conclusions being part of the documents of admissibility of the application.
  5. Applicants must submit their application files to the Secretariat General no later than forty five (45) days before the date of the Meeting General Elective.

The General Secretariat informs the Members of the names of the candidates selected and make them public in national and international media no later than fifteen (15) days before the date of the Elective General Assembly. The official list of candidates must reach the Members of the General Assembly of FECAFOOT with the agenda of the General Assembly where the election of the Executive Committee is scheduled, seven (07) days before the date of the General Assembly.

Going by the above conditions, Eto’o is definitely fit to vie for the position. Would he or Njitap be better fitted for the position, given that they are experienced players and can thus bring their experience to the table to turn things around? Well, we can only wait and see.
