“Samuel Eto’o Is The Problem Of Cameroon’s Football”- Veteran Sports Reporter Abel Mbengue alleges
Cameroonian Veteran Sports Reporter, Abel Mbengue has accused Cameroonian Legendary footballer and former captain of the Cameroon Indomitable Lions, Samuel Eto’o of being responsible for all the problems Cameroon football has suffered over the last few years.
During the African debate show presented by Alain Forka on the French Public Radio Service, Radio France Internationale (RFI) on January, 31st 2021, the former ace sports journalist accused Samuel Eto’o of influencing and meddling in the affairs of the Cameroonian football circle.
According to Abel Mbengue, Eto’o influenced the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) elections when his erstwhile lawyer, Barrister Dieudonné Happi was the President of the normalization committee of FECAFOOT in 2018. That led to the election of Saidou Mbombo Njoya who is now the Head of the Federation.
Abel Mbengue added that Eto’o is known for disrespecting and disregarding Football authority in Cameroon including the Minister of Sports and Physical Education; he visits the Cameroonian football team without consulting the hierarchy of the team. According to Abel Mbengue, French former professional footballer, Zidane for example can’t visit the French Football team without going through the hierarchy of the team but that is not the case with Eto’o in Cameroon.
According to Abel Mbengue, Eto’o has been preaching unity but has never stood for unity. Citing the African Nations Championship (CHAN) which is currently taking place in Cameroon, Mbengue said Eto’o was invited to the Amadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaounde during the last game together with other Cameroonian football icons and Cameroon’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education to boost the morale of the intermediate lions but Eto’o failed to honor the invitation. That according to him is disrespect and disregard for Football authority and does not in any way promote unity in the Cameroonian football circle.
