Cameroonian and Ajax prolific Goalkeeper, Andre Onana has been suspended by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for a period of 12 months for doping Violations. Doping in sports is the use of banned athletic performance-enhancing drugs by athletic competitors. Reasons why Andre Onana was Handed A 1 Year Suspension By UEFA.
During an “out of competition” drug test in October 2020, they found the substance furosemide in his urine. The suspension is effective from February 05, 2021, and this means he will not be available for his club Ajax or his country Cameroon until February 2022. This means he will miss the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which has been rescheduled to January 2022 in Cameroon.
In reaction to the ban, Ajax, the club where the goalkeeper currently plays with, writes that Onana was feeling unwell on the morning of October 30th. He wanted to take a pill to ease the discomfort but accidentally took a drug from his wife called lasimac.
According to UEFA, they believe the 24-year-old had no intention of cheating but there is nothing they can do; the suspension stands as anti-doping rules state that “an athlete has a duty at all times to ensure that no banned substances enter the body.”
Onana and his club, Ajax intend to appeal the decision at the Court Of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), hoping to cancel the ban or get a less severe punishment.
