Former Chelsea and Ghanaian football legend, Michael Essien has lost over 1 million followers on social media for publicly declaring support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community in Ghana. Essien had in an Instagram post on Monday, March 21 2021 endorsed the LGBT community in his country, Ghana. He wrote: “We see you, we hear you, we support you. Our LGBTQIA plus community in Ghana.”
This however didn’t sit well with most Ghanaians as they did not only reject Essien’s view publicly but also criticized and expressed their disgust at the superstar. Some of them even went on to unfollow him on social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
For instance, on Instagram, Essien had 1.9 million followers before his LGBT post. However, as of Wednesday, March 3, he was left with 1.4 million followers.
On Twitter, Essien had 1.4 million followers before his Instagram post. Now, he is left with just about 680,000 followers.
However, it would appear Essien has taken back his support for the LGBT community as he has now taken down the infamous Instagram post following the public backlash.
The LGBT community has been dominating media attention in Ghana in the last few weeks after public pressure led to the forced closure of a newly opened administrative office for the community.
Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo while reacting to the trending issue has stressed that same-sex marriage will not be legalized during his tenure as President of the West African nation.
