Meghan Markle Accuses Buckingham Palace Of ‘Perpetuating Falsehoods’ Against Her Amidst Bullying Allegations
Meghan made the comments during an interview about why they have decided to quit their royal roles, with American talk show host Oprah Winfrey. An excerpt of the interview was released on Wednesday, just a few hours after Buckingham Palace said it was going to investigate allegations that assistants working for Meghan two years ago had been bullied by her.
Meghan and Harry issued a statement denying that she had bullied any assistants or anyone else. A spokeswoman for Meghan also said she was “saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.”
When Oprah asked Meghan how she felt about the Palace hearing her speak her truth in the interview, she said: “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent, if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us. And if that comes with the risk of losing things, I mean, there’s a lot that’s been lost already.” The Firm is a nickname for the British Royal Family.
The interview was recorded before a report by The Times Newspaper revealed that an aide to Harry and Meghan had raised a complaint in October 2018 alleging that Meghan had reduced some of her assistants to tears and treated others so badly that they decided to quit.
After getting reports of the allegations, Buckingham Palace has said in a statement that they are clearly concerned about the allegations following claims made by former staff of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They have added that the Royal Household does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace.
The Duch and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, who tied the knot in May 2018, stepped back from their official duties in March 2020 to focus on new careers and have a financially independent life in California. All along, Meghan has said she felt she did not have the support of the royal family when they took that decision and that she did not feel protected when she was pregnant for their son, Archie..
