Cameroon’s Head Coach, Antonio Conceição da Silva Oliviera was at the Amadou Ahidjo Stadium this Saturday, March 20, 2021, to watch a top-flight match between AS Fortuna of Mfou and Avion of Nkam, perhaps to scout for potential talents for the Senior National Team. That to many should be a gesture worth applauding considering that most of his predecessors were criticized for failing to watch local championships and not giving home-based players a chance with the senior national team. However, to the astonishment of spectators, Conceição and his collaborators were thrown out of the stadium by the forces of law and order. According to men in uniform, their main reason for throwing out Conceição and his team is that they were observing COVID-19 preventive measures, which includes the playing of football matches behind closed doors.
Officials of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) attempted to justify the presence of the Coach and his collaborators at the stadium, in an effort to ensure that they stayed. That, however, didn’t seem convincing enough to the forces of law and order.
The embarrassing event has left football fans in the country wondering why the Coach of the senior national team should be sent out of a stadium during a top-flight match in an effort to respect COVID-19 preventive measures, whereas club officials, journalists, forces of law and order and other dignitaries are allowed into pitches during such game. To them, other preventive measures such as social distancing and the wearing of masks would have been better.
Coach Conceiçao and his players are currently preparing to play two AFCON qualifiers against Cape Verde and Rwanda on March 22 and 30 respectively.
