How does he do this?
First, he chose to go by an artistic name, Wisekid which sounds virtually the same as that of Nigerian popular superstar, Wizkid.
When Wizkid released his most recent album “Made In Lagos” in 2020, Wisekid released his own album with a similar title as well, titled “Lagidi Made.”
More interesting Lagidi went further to copy the names of the same songs that are in Wizkid’s album and used them for his album to deceive streaming platforms algorithms. These songs are Essense, Ginger, Grace, Gyrate, Longtime, Mighty Wine, No Stress, Piece of Me, Roma, Smile, Sweet and No Stress. Surprisingly, most streamers either don’t notice the difference or click on his album in error.
He is now getting a huge chunk of Wizkid’s streams, a total of 9.3 million streams and he is making a lot of money from it too. According to Africa Facts Zone, Wisekid makes $73, 170 (approximately N 30 Million) monthly from copying Wizkid’s songs.
He even went as far as copying Wizkid’s social media handles. He used the username Wisekidaya on Instagram and Twitter, and that is similar to Wiskidayo, a name that Wizkid uses on Instagram and Twitter. He has however deactivated his Twitter account and changed his Instagram handle to Ayaboyofficial.
Reacting to the allegations, Wisekid has said he is just an upcoming artist, and he is not the one distributing Wizkid’s album on apple music and claimed Freeme Digital has been the organ distributing his music.
“I have my company that distributes my music for me so I know nothing about this news spreading all over the internet. I don’t know who do that oo. I just access my apple artist name I saw streams I just wanted to get people check me out nothing more oo,” Wisekid said.
But Freeme Digital, in a statement denied, distributing his music.
It said: “It has come to our notice that an artist by the name of “Wisekid” claims to distribute an album titled ‘Lasgidi Made’ with our organization. How Unknown Nigerian Artiste, Wisekid Makes N30 Million Monthly From Copying Wizkid’s Songs
“While it is true that he distributes some of his contents through our organization, we will like to make it categorically clear that the said, ‘Lasgidi Made’ album was not distributed via our platform.
“We will be deleting the rest of Wisekid’s content on our platform and we have informed our legal team to immediately commence investigation on the issue and prosecute the matter to the full extent of the law.”
