DJ Khaled To Host MTV Africa Music Awards Kampala 2021 (MAMA)

American DJ, record executive, songwriter, record producer, media personality, and Grammy Award-winning sensation, DJ Khaled has been confirmed as the international host for the MTV Africa Music Awards Kampala 2021 (MAMA). DJ Khaled To Host MTV Africa Music Awards Kampala 2021 (MAMA)

The award will be broadcasting globally for the first time on MTV on February 20, 2021. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, Khaled will host the virtual ceremony from his home in Miami, Florida, alongside some African co-emcees for the famous Kampala event. The show’s home base will be Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda, East Africa.

Reacting to the news that he has been confirmed as the host of the event, the “Wild Thoughts” hitmaker,  DJ Khaled said, “MTV has always been a great partner so I jumped at the opportunity to host this year’s MAMAs. I can’t wait to celebrate the incredible music that comes out of Africa, which has inspired me throughout my career.”

The MTV Africa Music Awards were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa.

MAMA Kampala 2021 will spotlight 20 awards given out to celebrate the best in African talent over the past year. In addition to more common prizes: Best male artist, Best female artist, Best New Act, Best International, song, video, artist, and collaboration of the year, the MAMAs will acknowledge work from Portuguese and French-speaking Africa with the introduction of the Best Lusophone (Portuguese Speaking) and Best Francophone (French Speaking) categories. Other new awards include the MAMA Generation Change AwardBest Fan BaseAlone Together Best Lockdown Performance, and Personality of the Year.

The award has returned this 2021 after a 5-year break, since 2016 when it held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

According to Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events for Viacom CBS Media Networks, with Grammy Award-winning powerhouse DJ Khaled at the helm, they are certain the MAMAs 2021 will be an incredible, must-see global event. “Africa is home to some of the world’s most dynamic talent and we’re excited to spotlight these artists as the MAMAs broadcast in 180 countries for the first time in MTV history,” Gillmer adds.
