Cameroonian first Cardinal, Christian Wiyghan Tumi has died at the age of 91. According to reports, the cleric passed away in Douala after a brief illness, yesterday evening on Good Friday, the same day Christians believe Jesus Christ died. Christian Cardinal Tumi Dies At 91
Since the news broke out in the early hours of this Saturday, thousands of Christians in Cameroon and beyond have flooded social media to express their sadness over the demise of the charismatic religious leader.
Before his death, Christian Tumi was a Cardinal Priest and the Archbishop Emeritus of Douala.
Cardinal Christian Tumi was born on October 15, 1930, in Kikaikelaki, Kumbo, Bui Division of the North West region of Cameroon. In 1979, he was elected the first Bishop of the Diocese of Yagoua. In 1984, he was made Archbishop and in 1985, he was elected President of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon and held the post until 1991. He was named Cardinal-Priest of Santi Martiri dell’Uganda a Poggio Ameno in 1988 by Pope John Paul II. He was later appointed Archbishop of Douala in 1991. Christian Cardinal Tumi Dies At 91
