Champions League Final Moved From Istanbul To PortugalNkafu 237 | 13.05.2021 | 0 | Sports
One of the world’s biggest soccer displays, the UEFA Champions League final 2021 between Manchester City and Chelsea has been moved from the initial schedule location Istanbul, Turkey to Porto, Portugal.
The move came as a result of the coronavirus which is currently raging in Instanbul. The city is currently on lockdown and that would have made it impossible for fans to be part of the showdown.
European Football governing body, UEFA confirmed the move this Wednesday on their social media handles and added that 6000 fans will be able to attend.
The decision came on the heels of discussions between European football leaders and British government officials, who had been seeking to bring the game to London. This would have allowed the team and their fans to avoid international travel, but the sides, however, failed to reach an agreement. Portugal was thus chosen as the best option and this means the country will be hosting the game for the second time in a row.
The all-English affair between Manchester City and Chelsea which was scheduled to be played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul will now be played at the Estádio Dragão, home of FC Porto on May 29, 2021.
The Estádio Dragão’s capacity of about 50,000 will be reduced to just a little over 10% of that figure, 6000, in an effort to adhere to coronavirus prevention measures.
