A few days ago, the CEO of Cliq Empire, Prince Myke Enobi announced that Nigerian Superstar, Naira Marley will be in Buea, Cameroon on February 14. Since then, Tickets with prices ranging from 10,000 FCFA to 1,000,000 FCFA have been on sale and many fans of the controversial star especially those who identify themselves as “Marlians” can’t wait to welcome him in Cameroon for the first time ever.

However, it appears there is a group of Cameroonian music fans and promoters who are not happy about Naira Marley’s upcoming visit to Cameroon and they have been taking to social media to threaten to stop the event as well as call on fellow Cameroonians to totally boycott Naira Marley’s concert.

But why would some Cameroonians want to prevent Naira Marley from coming to Cameroon? One would think it is about the ticket prices but apparently not.

Recall that Naira Marley’s visit is coming at a time when there has been a strong call on social media for the Cameroonian government to ban foreign music especially Nigerian music as well as foreign artistes from performing in Cameroon. The call for foreign music to be banned in the country was first made by Cameroonian Comedian Old Pancho CY International.

Ko-C also made a video calling for a total ban on f foreign music and a few other Cameroonian entertainers and fans have done the same. The argument here is that foreign music, especially Nigerian music is loved and enjoyed by Cameroonians, most Cameroonians can actually list more names of Nigerian artistes than they can list names of Cameroonian artistes and they are invited every now and then to perform in Cameroon. However, this is not the same for Nigerians, they don’t listen to Cameroonian songs, they don’t know Cameroonian artistes and no Cameroonian artiste ever gets invited to Nigeria. A popular DJ in Nigeria had even said they don’t play Cameroonian music in their country and if it the Cameroon music industry wants to grow up, they must learn to play, promote and encourage their own artistes.

According to these fans and promoters of Cameroonian music who do not want Naira Marley in Cameroon, it is high time Cameroonians started enjoying and promoting their own culture, and bringing in Nigerian stars like Naira Marley won’t help them do that. Other music lovers in Cameroon have however argued that all they want is good music, it doesn’t matter where it is coming from.

February 14 is just about a month away, would this group of fans succeed in preventing Naira Marley from coming to Cameroon even when most of his fans in Cameroon are craving him? Well, we can only wait until then.
