Kenyan champions Gor Mahia are currently facing a possible ban from CAF after their players attacked the center referee at the end of a Confederation Cup game on Sunday, February 21, 2021. CAF Confederation Cup: Gor Mahia Players Beat Referee After Losing Match
Gor Mahia was on track to qualify for the group stage of the competition after securing a 2-1 lead against Napsa Stars in Zambia in the regular 90 minutes of play.
Unfortunate for them, an injury-time penalty saw striker Emmanuel Mayuka secure the Zambians a 2-2 draw thus qualifying on a 3-2 aggregate having beat Gor 1-0 in Nairobi.
The Kenyan side was apparently very displeased with the South African referee Lebalang Mokete’s decision to award the penalty and they attacked him just when the final whistle went off.
According to an anonymous official from Gor Mahia, CAF has promised to review the incident and they could be severely punished if found guilty.
“The situation after the game was not good, the players were angered by the referee’s decision to award the penalty late on and were also not happy the game was played six minutes of added time, and that is why they reacted like that,” he said.
“The referee later promised to give all the details to Caf and I am sure the club will be fined and banned, I don’t think Caf is going to spare us, we have to wait and see but the referee was not happy after the game.
“The worst part is the referee also picked out on individual players, who attacked him, and it means the players will also be punished individually while the club will also face their own wrath,” the official added.
Speaking shortly after the game, Gor Mahia coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto defended his players for attacking the referee. According to him, in as much as what they did was not correct, what happened at the closing stages of the game was very frustrating and might have angered them.
