Details ofthe 2021 Grammys Premiere Ceremony have been announced. The pre-show will be live-streamed onGrammy.com at 3 p.m. Eastern on March 14, ahead of the main telecast, which broadcasts at 8 p.m. Eastern.Jhene Aiko is set to host, and there’ll be performances from Lido Pimienta, Poppy, Rufus Wainwright, and from one of the biggest names in afro beats, Burna boy. In addition, the Premiere Ceremony will kick off with a huge ensemble of previous Grammy nominees (including Gregory Porter, Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra, Regina Carter, and Kamasi Washington) performing Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)” in tribute to the late legend.
The 2021 Grammy Awards were originally scheduled to take place in January before they werepostponed to March due to the “deterioratingCOVID situation in Los Angeles.” In December, it wasannounced that Talking Heads, Salt-N-Pepa, Selena, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, and more would receive Lifetime Achievement Grammys.
Burna Boy was is nominated at the 2021 Grammy Awards in the Best Global Music Category alongside Tuareg desert rock group Tinariwen, NYC afrobeat outfit Antibalas, Brazilian-American Bebel Gilberto, and British-Indian sitar player Anoushka Shankar. Previously known as the international category of Best World Music Album, the category was renamed to “make it more modern and inclusive.”
Other nominees include Beyoncé, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion up for Record of the Year, H.E.R for the Song of the Year, Buju Banton for Best Reggae Album, and more.
This is Burna Boy’s second Grammy nomination after losing to the iconic Angelique Kidjo during the last ceremony. Considering the praise Twice as Tallhas received, we hope this is the year he takes the award home.
It is good to know Burna Boy remains the only Nigerian artist to had perform at the BRITS award the BET and now the Grammys.
