Cameroonian singer, Queen of New Bell music, Reniss has weighed in on the ongoing trending debate on whether foreign music should be completely banned in Cameroon or not. Reniss recently took to her social media pages and emphatically wrote “Plzzzzzz you can’t force someone to listen to your music. Fans have the freedom to choose who they want to listen to…abeg no bi by force.” Reniss Fires At Cameroonians Calling For A Ban On Foreign Music In Cameroon.
Wondering why Reniss would make such comments? Well, over the last few days, there has been a growing call for the Cameroonian government to completely ban foreign music and especially Nigerian music in Cameroon. This call was first made publicly by Cameroonian Comedian, Cy International AKA Old Pancho. Cameroonian rapper and author of the trending calecon hit track, Ko-C also added his voice to the call when he made a video on the subject. According to Ko-C and other music promoters and fans who have been championing this call, Nigerians in particular, do not even know Cameroonian artistes, talk less of listening to their songs whereas Cameroonians know virtually all Nigerian artistes and listen to Nigerian music, perhaps more than they listen to Cameroonian songs. So why continue to support their artistes and listen to their songs if they can’t do the same for us.
However, Reniss isn’t having any of it. She is apparently of the belief that “If your music is good, then it is good.” You don’t have to force people to listen to your song and they have the choice to listen to whatever they want to.
While a few fans have criticized Reniss for being insensitive to the plights of an industry in which she is a key player, others have praised her for saying the truth. According to them, “fans have the right to choose the songs they want to listen to. You can’t force them to listen to A or not listen to B.”
