Ankara was originally manufactured by the Dutch for the Indonesian textile market. However, the prints gained significantly more interest in West African countries because of the tribal patterns.

It is made through the Wax-resist dyeing technique called Batik

* How it gained popularity
The popularity of the fabrics was due to the West African soldiers who were serving in Indonesia, as they brought back the batik fabrics when they returned home in the 1880s.
These Western countries include Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal which over the years gradually spread out to other neighboring countries with Cameroon included.

A full piece of Ankara measures 12 yards (11cm) while half-piece measures 6 yards (5.5cm)
